About the Book

I have tried to recall when I first became aware of trains or railroads. Perhaps my earliest memory is hearing the whistles from my home on Pine Street in Burlington Vermont. Or perhaps being under the train shed at Essex Jct. as one of Central Vermont’s steam powered passenger trains arrived to take my grandfather to Boston. Those are my earliest recollections; the first subliminal, the second terrifying. Did my father have a fascination with trains?
