About the Book

Jeremiah Cuthbert Shelby (JC), an ex navy man who suffers from congenital sea sickness, goes back to college in a small town in Iowa after one enlistment tour to get his degree in criminal Justice. With a part time job in the college library he is in an ideal position to put his academic plans to premature use when the body of a young library assistant is discovered in a vault in the Special Collections stacks. Romance enters the picture when he is ably assisted in his sleuthing by Susan, a part time library employee. There turns out to be more than one murder which makes the case too much for the local Chief of Police, the professors, or the leading citizens of Avon, Iowa.

About the Author

Hood, a physicist, started his adult life in WWII aboard a destroyer. After the war he worked in aerospace engineering designing optical star trackers for ancient versions of intercontinental air-breathing missiles. Then he joined a laboratory of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography devoted to the science of military camouflage and visibility. Later he headed electro optics technology work at the Navy’s Electronics Laboratory Center in San Diego where development of lasers and fiber optics stimulated him to take leave to study for his PhD in England. After 25 years of Navy service he joined the faculty of San Diego State University where he taught Natural Science courses and Physics for 23 years. His activities included presidencies of the local section of the Optical Society of America and later of the Friends of the Library Board at the University. He taught in the school of business and studied and lectured Jungian psychology. He has published three books: one of short stories with such disparate subjects as a children’s fairy tale, a short horror tale, the humorous and satiric adventures of a modern Dr. Panglos with the unlikely name of Mr.Throttlebottom. More recently his two novels, Dark Matter, and Adam’s Isle have appeared: the first a psychological murder thriller, and the second a coming of age tale set in a future period when rising sea levels have created an island of Point Loma, San Diego.
