About the Book

About the Author

Jean Reaves became involved in learning and teaching bridge while living in Alexandria, Egypt, where her husband was on a three-year job assignment.  She met many bridge enthusiasts from the States, Europe and Africa through the U.S. Consulate who were interested in the world’s most popular card game, especially American style.  As the designated leader of the group, she ordered books by Root, Kantar, Lawrence and Silverman from which “to spread the word.”  The group studied together and also attended lectures by Omar Shariff in Cairo.  These experiences started her on an exciting journey of duplicate and tournament bridge, three Lifemaster Awards and a feature as a 25-year ACBL Accredited Star Teacher.

Her first book, Bridge for Beginners, covers basics.  Conventional Wisdom Plus gives a brief review of the basics and detailed information relating to:  Strong Twos, Weak Twos, Preempts, Slams, Splinters, Doubles, Leads, The Play of the Hand, The Defense of the Hand and thirty of the most popular conventions.  Each subject was expanded from Reaves’ lesson plans and is followed by full practice hands and important tips for the advancing player.  Her goal in writing the book was to compose enough pertinent information in one source to elevate the ability of intermediate players.

Each chapter illustrates the value of a good foundation in the bidding process, the art of partnership understanding and communication and the importance of concentrating on every card--whether bidding, playing or defending.
