Climbing the final mountain on the Appalachian Trail August 2006
Our 2:00 am alarms jolted us awake in the shelter at the Birches Campground, five miles and 4000 feet below the summit of Baxter Peak. We shivered as we unzipped our sleeping bags and replaced the 98 degree air for a 40-degree chill. It seemed like it was too cold for August, but we had just woken up and our fuel tanks were empty; the half pound of pasta from the evening had already been spent, and we were ready for some cereal--8 "servings" of it to be precise--but when you're hungry and tired you can divide that number by 4.

About the Book
During their five years at MIT the Gilbertson twins have challenged themselves to a variety of adventures in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, numerous mountain climbs in the western United States and hiked the entire 2100+ miles of the Appalachian Trail. In this collection of stories, readers will travel with the adventurers up and down some of the highest mountains in the United States, hike theAppalachian Trail and take a bicycle ride from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to Montana. About the Author
Eric Gilbertson and Matthew Gilbertson were born in Berea, Kentucky in 1986. They both graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2008 with degrees in Mechanical Engineering. They are now pursuing graduate degrees at MIT.
