The story begins on a beautiful sunny morning in March 1944. I was in the first squad of the first platoon of the antitank company attached to the 66th Infantry Regiment. Our 57mm antitank gun was dug in at
We proceeded in a westward direction. Within a half hour the scene changed when four Messerschmitt aircraft passed over us heading west. When they reached a point where they were between us and the sun, they turned and attacked taking advantage of the sun which made it very difficult for us to see them or realize that we were their target.
Once the attacks started, the squad members scattered. Being unable to quickly remove myself from the scene or to find shelter away from the weapon system, I became a target of choice. I took the full brunt of repeated attacks before the pilots departed to return to their base. Antiaircraft support did not arrive until all aircraft had left the scene.
