This is a no spin story of how I endured and survived sixteen successive attacks by four enemy aircraft in WWII.

 


About the Author

Paul Contos was born in Chicago, Illinois, one of three sons and one daughter of immigrant parents. He attended Drummond and Burr Elementary and Lane Technical High schools. After graduating high school at the age of 17, he got a job with the U. S. Army Signal Corps Inspection Zone. In March, 1944 he registered for the draft and volunteered to be inducted. He was inducted on May 30.

After eight weeks of basic training and four weeks in the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP), he was assigned to the Antitank Company, attached to the 66th Infantry Regiment in the 71st (Red Circle) Division with which he served in Europe.

He was injured in combat and earned the Meritorious Unit Citation, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. He served his country proudly.

After release from military service, he took advantage of the G. I. Bill and worked his way through schools earning a Television Degree from the American Television Institute in Chicago and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois in Urbana, Illinois.

After graduating from the U. of I., he went to work at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in the newly created Missiles and Space Division until he retired 32 years later. He now resides in San Jose, California where he keeps in close touch with his children and grandchildren.
