Goodbye Nightbird

     Sijn shook herself, realizing she had stood there slipping into her reverie like she was there at the concert again.  Shana still stared at her with that smirk on her face, occasionally taking a drag on her cigarette.  “What a charming groupie story and told with such flair, you really should try your hand at writing,” the writer sarcastically commented. 

            “Fuck you, do you want to hear the rest or not?” Sijn asked, starting to not like this person at all.  She protectively held the bag with the journal in it in her lap, her fingers working on the nylon straps.

            “Okay, forgive me, do continue.”  Shana nodded for her to do so.

            She explained how that night she had made love to Dereck Cliffe.  How she had woken up alone the next day with her neck sore and not knowing why.  At this point she looked Shana in the eye for any sign of a reaction, and there was a small flicker.  She watched the woman’s face carefully before she dropped the real bomb on her.  A month later, I realized I was pregnant.  Pregnant with Dereck’s baby.”

            Pain shot across Shana’s face and she threw the whiskey glass on the floor in an angry gesture.  “You’re a goddamned liar!  You might be pregnant but it can’t be Dereck’s, because he was a . . .” her voice trailed off.  “Because he’s a . . . a . . .”

            “A vampire,” Sijn answered softly, staring into the other woman’s eyes.
