Preface
Zigzagrams is a logic game intended to bring puzzle lovers a rediscovery of the 9x9 square as a setting equipped with the necessary elements to spark creative thinking. The game is an evolution of Sudoku where the distinction between even and odd numbers plays a defining role in the nature of the reasoning to be applied.
The condition that “every compartment must contain an odd number of odd numbers” adds a new dimension to the thinking mix. This extension complements systematic search with combinations of elementary ideas emerging from its logical implications, thus triggering the following double effect: On the one hand the rule contributes to moderating the patience requirement placed upon beginners - as it helps them to simplify their search at many points by applying sharper focus - while on the other it provides trained players with an enhanced set of “tricks” to combine in imaginative problem-solving.
As the parity rule given above would be redundant in the familiar square-box partition, Zigzagrams incorporates compartments of varying sizes – named zigzagons because of their twisting appearance – which, in addition to providing this rule with content, contribute to spreading information by virtue of lining up with a large number of other compartments. A zigzagon works quite like a spoon stirring sugar in a cup of coffee.
Each step of every puzzle in this collection can be solved by means of elementary ideas. The challenge is to combine the right mix of themes at the right place and at the right point in the solution, a skill that improves with practice. Consequently, no hints or tips are necessary nor are they provided to avoid interfering with individual resourcefulness.
The puzzles are organized in five levels of challenge. The final “Mastery Puzzle” will allow you to fully apply the expertise you will have gained by the time you get to it.
You are about to set off on an exciting journey in the 9x9.
Welcome to the world of Zigzagrams!
