Yorkshire Terriers are easy recognized by their long luxurious silky blue and tan coats, usually wearing a hair ribbon on their topknot. It’s not uncommon today, to see Yorkies sporting dresses or shirts, as the dog industry seems to understand our love for the little darlings, many people treat them like children rather than dogs. Some Yorkies seem to enjoy in being dressed in clothing, and will prance around to show off a new outfit. They prefer warmer weather, so if you do live in a colder environment, a good sweater or dog coat is recommended. Yorkshire Terriers are a portable size pooch and travel well, and delight in the attention they receive when visiting outside of the home. They make wonderful pets and will easily adapt to most homes. I have often told others, that once you own a Yorkie you will never own another breed. Many Yorkie owners have more than one, because caring for two isn’t much more work than caring for one, and Yorkies enjoy the company of their own. I have spent many hours being entertained just watching my own dogs interact with each other it can be quite amusing. Owning more than one also eases my guilt when I go out to run errands, because I know they have each other’s company while I am gone. Make no mistake, yorkies have a great need for interaction with their owners, and always want to please. This breed can suffer from separation anxiety more than some of the other breeds, and requires a great deal of human companionship. They dislike being left alone for more than a few hours, so if you work all day, this is probably not the best breed for you, unless you are able to stop home during your lunch hour to reassure your dog. You can always expect your Yorkie to greet you at the door, welcoming your arrival back home.

Patricia O'Grady lives on the West Coast of Florida with her husband William. She also shares her home with 2 Yorkshire Terriers, and a talking Quaker Parrot. She is originally from Long Island, New York. Patricia is a professional dog trainer with experience in all breeds. She has raised, bred and trained champion Yorkshire terriers for over 25 years. She's a self-taught cook that enjoys creating new recipes, cooking and eating healthy. She hopes that her success and mistakes as a breeder, trainer and pet owner will benefit other dog lovers and their pets. Patricia received a Covey Award in 2009, for her book, Mirror Mirror Seven Years Bad Luck.
