Not but twenty minutes after Ornery had returned to the ranch proper but the US Cavalry Lieutenant and his forty-man patrol arrived by the east. The lieutenant barked commands so’s to dispersed his force into a broad skirmish line, ready for battle, the troopers with their carbines and revolvers, while his field gun was also set up for operation against the ranch to his west, three and a half furlongs, and behind the horse force. Then he, his second and that man’s same calmly rode up to meet the Cap’n on the opposite side of that ranch gate. As the lieutenant came, his eyes rubber-ed around the inside grounds of the fenced ranch compound and he saw that it appeared now like “Fortress Tucker”; the building windows boarded up, wagons horse-hitched, men in gray uniforms placed about strategically, and a host more obvious signs that those inside the fence intended the business of war, if’n nothing else. Peering long into the big yard, it did appear to be a short ‘box canyon’ approach to certain death and destruction for him and his Seventh (Cavalry) saddleback-saber-soldiers. This war was something he prayed to avoid if’n possible, yet still he had to conduct the appropriate business of his commanding superiors for which he had been sent so far to accomplish.

About the Book
Montana Kid Hammer continues his distinct brand of American old fashion storytelling tradition with, Back in the Saddle Again, the second novel in The Old West Adventures of Ornery and Slim cowman series. Ornery, a schoolteacher and Civil War survivor turned veteran cowhand, and Slim, a young Philadelphia orphan now a part learned cowman continue to ride for the brand simply known as the O U T (Oh-Ewe-Tee) Spread.
Their partnership is rekindled as they are back in their saddles again to face down cantankerous critters, the harsh western prairie elements, the lay of the land, payroll robbing outlaws, run away stagecoaches, countless dangers of a cattle drive, a cow hunt, along with some not so common cowmen calamities. Ornery and Slim labor to craft an ongoing relationship with the boss, their many pards, and their calico-gal friends, all while building a hearty proficiency around the cow craft of their day.
The setting for this storybook is far less fictional and happens on the high plains of the very real North American frontier west, circa 1880’s. Also shared is that time-honored cattleman’s code of the west, the one so highly prevalent in the folk of the era, and played out by this tome’s many matchless characters. Conveyed are humorous escapades of the cowmen as they ply their cow craft for the ‘brand’. The anecdotal happenings are said so as to expose the wide range of cowman endeavors encountered along the trails and upon the plains of that very same unsettled frontier.
This novel is designed to rekindle fond recollections of Old West evenings sat around campfires to a plethora of untold, yet hair-raising cowman tales. Here is a genuinely marvelous opportunity to return to those wild and wooly days of America’s western yesteryear.
About the Author
Montana Kid Hammer or Kid is a native Montanan, author and educator whose abode is nestled in the hills just north of Fairbanks, Alaska. He enjoys horseback riding, snow skiing, hunting, reading history, cowboy action shooting, and traveling far flung across the American West. Kid has a family; six children, four grandchildren, is a retired military man, and has lived and traveled in the region of which he writes. Kid schooled at Eastern Montana College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Institute, the Community College of the Air Force and the Institute of Children’s Literature, is self-published locally in Fairbanks with an Old West short-story volume, and has produced professional-technical submissions for the United States Air Force-Air Education and Training Command, and nationally with his Ornery and Slim storybook series. He is a NRA Certified Instructor and Life member, a Life member of the Single Action Shooting Society & SASS Range Officer One and Two, and a Life member of the Golden Heart Shootist Society of Fairbanks.
