The older man walked down to the edge of the lake, where Jeff steered the bass into a small indentation. It was a perfect place to reach down and grab the fish. After several heart-wrenching misses, Gerald grasped the fish securely by its lower lip. It was a huge specimen, larger than any smalljaw that Gerald had ever caught during his many years of fishing. “Seven, maybe an eight-pounder,” the man thought. The bass possessed a huge belly, which was uncharacteristic of the normally streamlined fish, and it was a beautiful dark brown color. “Yes, sir,” the man thought, “That’s a once in a lifetime catch.” “What a fish!” Gerald yelled to his son, almost more excited than the boy. “That’s one of the biggest ones I’ve ever seen! What do you want to do with it? Do you want to mount it?” Jeff had a big smile on his face. “But Dad, don’t you know what fish this is?” Gerald looked back at his son a little dumbfounded. “Remember that summer trip we took here when I was about five? I told you I’d catch that fish again off of this very same point!” Gerald glanced back into the cove at the dock and followed the distant outline back to where they stood. For a moment he relived the past, and the vision of the time his son recalled suddenly came to him. “You mean?” “That’s right!” said the boy. “It’s the smallmouth revisitin’ us. Got ‘im again!” Gerald did not then have to ask what to do with the fish. He knew what his son would want. Extracting the hook from the bass’s mouth and winking at the boy, he held the smallmouth up so they could get one last look at it. Then, the man kneeled at the edge of the lake and released the giant bass back into it. With a flip of the fish’s tail, it floated back into the welcoming depths. Jeff smiled down at his father as he watched the fish go. Gerald felt a small lump in his throat as he gazed out at the whipping winds that still buffeted the lake into whitecaps. Then, he warmly looked with affection at his son, Jeff, who he had just learned was a boy no more.

About the Author
Chambless Johnston was born in 1952 into a family that had always enjoyed a tradition of hunting and fishing. At an early age his father taught him how to hunt and fish and also taught him the ethical aspects of those sports while stressing safety and fine treatment of the environment. Most of all he was taught to respect the game he hunted or fished for. Johnston graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, MO with a degree in English. He also obtained a degree in English Education from U.T. Knoxville. He has worked as a businessman, teacher, artist, and writer, and he has always been somewhat of a world traveler. Previously published work includes Africa and the Hunting Tradition, a book about the origins of man's desire to hunt and the greatest hunters of the African Continent. He has also written a journal fittingly called The Journey from which some of the tales of this book have come. He has also written five movie scripts and another anthology of short stories called Cries of the Voiceless. He is married and has two children. Currently he owns his own medical business and lives in Kingston Springs, Tennessee. In his writing you will always find an appreciation for the outdoors and for some of the people who share time with him out in nature. There is a common bond between true sportsmen, and he hope sthat those of you have experienced your own special times will enjoy some of these yarns.
