About the Author

Writer Michael Springthorpe ("Mayflower Gilbert and Sullivan", "Eppie and Beppie", “The Bones at Red 22”) was born in Australia and presently lives in Los Angeles with his wife Kate and many babies and it was he who, in a season not long ago, helped a tiny possum channel the story of her priceless and valiant life. "In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together, the leopard will lie down with the baby goat...." (Isaiah 11-6)

Short but very captivating read, October 19, 2012

Before reading this book, I would've never thought of a possum as being a sympathetic character. Most people see possums as a nuisance. However, this story is written in a way to where one can definitely have empathy for Harriet and her predicament in life. It's an interesting anthropomorphic view into the mind of one of God's creatures that is often overlooked and/or reviled. A good reminder that all animals have their purpose in the ecosystem. I think this book might make a good audio book someday. Perhaps Mr. Springthorpe will consider doing that someday...and making it an expanded version of the story. I'd love to find out what becomes of Harriet and her friends.

""Harriet first began keeping a journal when she was six months old. She didn't write anything down - writing is not easy for possums, especially babies, but she kept everything in her mind."" With a first line like that, how can you not continue reading?!

Springthorpe engages you from the very beginning in this truly unique book that will delight adults and children alike. Harriet is a plucky possum with a penchant for adventure, who gets into trouble when she decides to follow her friend across ""the black strip.""

The story is short, sweet, and ever so memorable. In fact, after personally witnessing a sad exchange between a possum and an SUV on an off-ramp, my mind went straight to ""Harriet!"" as I tried to hold back my tears. Thankfully, all turns out well in the end for the charming heroine in this mini masterpiece (I finished it one sitting). Would recommend!

Springthorpe is just brilliant,what a lovely tale,so beautifully written.You are drawn in instantly,taken deep inside this ever so tiny life,becoming totally attached to her.This is a book the whole family is sure to love. Harriet's Journal "

"In the past, people were accused of being anthropomorphic any time they ascribed any ""human"" quality to a non-human animal. Thankfully, we are reaching a place where anthropomorphism is no longer seen as a dirty word; a crime committed by sappy animal lovers. Even scientist are no longer able to dispel the fact that the non human animal DOES have feelings and emotions, often very similar to our own. ""Harriet's Journal"" is the incredible tale of an injured possum, told from HER point of view. How can we know what her point of view may be? Perhaps we don't know exactly what other animals are feeling or thinking. But, those who enjoy being close to animals and take the time to care for them can see, in their eyes, facial expressions and body language, many of the same expressions seen in humans, and can interpret these expressions for what they really are....EMOTION. In his book, ""Harriet's Journal"", this is exactly what author Michael Springthrope has done. Through his interpretations of the feelings and emotions of one small possum, Springthorpe has given us a true and emotional look into the life of a wild, injured animal. I found myself drawn in to Harriet's life and with Springthorpe's beautiful prose, you could envision being right there, with Harriet, as the story unfolds. Harriet's Journal also serves to dispel some of the myths behind the life and behavior of possums. Myths, that have for years, caused the possum to be treated poorly, with people believing they were dangerous, disease carrying marsupials. I feel this book has opened a door, allowing people to feel comfortable with the ever growing knowledge of the existence of non human animal emotions and feelings. It is a beautiful and thoughtful story for people of all ages and I highly recommend you read this wonderful book about a possum's journey from injury to health, and all she felt in-between."
