The shovel descended, dumping cold, wet stuff on me, while the corner of it bounced off my skull. The force knocked all fight out of me, and the snowy white world turned black, as I let out a scream and sank to the ground. Blinding brightness seemed to penetrate the blackness, yet I was not scared. The radiance was somehow warm and comfortable, even though my eyes were shut and my breathing seemed to have stopped. I heard that priests and preachers try to separate the soul of a dying person from the body as they try to convince them to let go, and allow the soul to erupt free from the crumbling shell it lived with, and fly away to a different time to rest, rejuvenate, and prepare to continue life anew, in a different body somewhere, somewhen. My feeling was that even without a priest my soul was on the verge of breaking free, leaving my collapsed black-furred Chow shell behind. I was there, yet I was not tied to that space. I was looking on the scene from above. I observed my owner cradling my inert body…

About the Book
Bodies are merely the custodians of an indestructible spark of life. The body and the soul mature and grow old together. Old people don’t understand the younger generation because they keep entirely different dreams as reality. In time the body becomes a corpse and the spirit moves to the place where souls go to rest, to rejuvenate, before they start a new role in a new body. Shawsong was a pet of mundane as well as famous people. He may have another existence, another role to make observations, somewhere even now.
