I don't remember the first time I saw Hobo or Tess, but I do remember the first time I saw my best dog. The day was May 6, 2001, a Sunday. It was a typical May day in Hilton Head, sunny and about 90 degrees. I only lived about three miles from the school, and I was nervous about what to expect. I turned the corner and Meghan was playing with the puppy on the grass by the high school tennis courts. The dog was fetching a tennis ball for her. She was black and small, about the size of a full-grown cat. She was less than two months old. Meghan told me she was the runt of the litter. I mark May 6, 2001 as one of the very best days of my life. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was about to embark on the best adventure I've ever had, an adventure full of friendship, loyalty, companionship and love. The little puppy I soon named Devo grew into someone whose friendship has never wavered, whose loyalty knows no bounds, who is the best companion I've ever known and who has given me more love than almost any person I've ever met.

About the Author
Chuck Rudolph is an avid animal lover, runner and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He has been a high school Social Studies teacher for the past 20 years. He currently resides near Fredericksburg, Virginia where he happily shares his home with his dogs Devo and Maverick and Dixie the cat.
