They had done as instructed without hindrance. I think the sight of their leader sprawled out on his back had re-installed the fear factor much better than my words. With their backs to the wall, and their hands by their sides, they looked like the oddest line up, I had ever seen.
“You,” I pointed the gun at the first dwarf in the line, “take your beard and hat off.”
Bashful slowly removed his beard, and then his hat to reveal a chubby white face. I spoke again, after realising that he didn’t have what I wanted, “go and stand over there.”
Not surprisingly, he scurried across to the opposite side of the room without much hesitation.
“You. Over there.”
I waved the gun at Dopey, and he marched across the room to stand next to Bashful. His beardless brown face had made it easier to spot that he didn’t have my body.
“You. Next.”
This time I was waving the gun at Grumpy. He removed a long white beard, and hat, and then made his way across to the other side of the room after I’d nodded for him to do so. Now, there were three dwarfs on either side of the room, and one lying on the floor with a bullet in his head.
“You.”
Sleepy was next to follow suit. Beard first, and then hat. He looked more anxious than the others about revealing his face. As he walked across the room, I studied his simple tired face. It was familiar, but I couldn’t think why. Then again, I wasn’t an avid fan of television.
Sneezy was second to last. After removing his headpiece and short beard, he started strolling across the room. I was tempted to shoot the old bastard dead there and then. It wasn’t the way he’d taken it upon himself to cross the room without my permission that had infuriated me, but the nonchalant manner in which he’d done it.
