You can only imagine the looks on our faces and the “Uh Ohs,” not to mention the thoughts of What do we do now? that we harbored as we looked at one another. We figured that we were doomed because its next stop was about 50 miles away and we would really be in big trouble then. We knew that the railroad tracks passed only about 150 yards from our house. We likewise knew that if we didn’t get off that train by that point, we would be on it for the duration of its trip, because the train would soon be going much too fast for us to jump. And we would really be in trouble then. It was already getting dark and we realized nobody had any idea where we were, and we were in enough trouble already. That is always the point we seemed to think about the consequences of our actions. Right as the coal car we were riding in passed directly over that high cinder embankment over one of the stream culverts that passed underneath the tracks, we threw all caution to the wind with an “It’s now or never,” and jumped.
