Sunlight poured through the window of a small pet store in Newport, Rhode Island, called Wags & Whiskers. It was the dawn of a new day, and sixteen puppies woke when the sun’s rays warmed their tiny faces.
More than anything, each of them wanted a new family to come and take them home, and they each had different visions of what home would be like.
The Labradors wanted to run through grassy fields and chase tennis balls. The German shepherds wanted to protect their new families from strangers. Others just wanted to snuggle up with their new owners and feel loved.
One of the puppies had short golden fur and big floppy ears. Her eyes were deep brown, and she had a curled tail. She dreamed of a new family, too. But she also wanted something more … exciting.
She stared out the window of the pet store, where she could see the ocean and the boats and the seagulls soaring across the sky. What amazing sights they must see!
Her eyes were wide with wonder as she studied the world outside her tiny cage. Near the water’s edge she saw a Fiddler crab climb out from his hole in the sand and walk toward the water. He had two white claws—one big and one small—and strange little black eyes. The crab walked sideways toward the water until a small wave washed over him, and he disappeared.
Goodbye, Mr. Crab, thought the puppy. Oh how she wished she could go with him! What would she see beneath the rolling waves—fish, eels, maybe even a shark?
As she thought about the Fiddler crab, she noticed a small seashell moving across the sand. How was it doing that? Was there something living inside the shell?
And why did the seagulls carry clams way into the air and then drop them onto the rocks?
The puppy sighed and settled back down in her cage. She had so many questions that needed to be answered. But for now, there was only her tiny cage, in a tiny pet store, with its tiny window.
She would not be discouraged. One day, I will be a famous explorer, she thought. I’ll see the Seven Wonders of the World! I’ll swim with the Great White Sharks! I’ll capture pirates off the coast of South Africa! I’ll have adventures on every continent from here to Australia! All I need is someone to share the sights with. Someone with the two c’s: courage and curiosity—just like me!
She stared outside the tiny window.
If you’re out there, I’m waiting for you, she thought. I’m ready and I’m waiting …
