                                The Scorpion and the Frog 

            You may be wondering why in God’s name is life this way- selfishness, cheating, cruelty and killing among the many other things that don’t exist in heaven. And, despite what you’re taught that’s the way the world is.  It will never change unless, as I said before, the population of the entire world takes a daily happiness-be nice pill. So be a Darwinian and adapt to reality or you’ll lose in life.

            After 9/11 when the Twin Towers in Manhattan were destroyed taking with them thousands of Americans lives, I met a young lady who had lost her fiancée that day. She, really full of passion and with tears rolling down her cheeks, said something like, “Why are people so cruel? Why are there wars? Why do people kill and murder? My fiancé was a kind man who wouldn’t hurt a fly.” And then she naively added, “Why can’t people just sit down and talk to each other to iron out their differences and live in peace?” I was about to try to answer these questions but I couldn’t for the truth would have made things worse for her.

            There’s a famous book, Aesop’s Fables, mainly about animal stories such as The Tortoise and the Hare and the Boy Who Cried Wolf that carry messages and lessons about what life’s all about.  It was written about around 600 B.C. by the Greek slave, Aesop. If you haven’t heard about these fables then there’s something wrong with your school curriculum and you should have changed schools when you had a chance.

            Anyway, there’s one story about a scorpion and an innocent frog. One day, as the frog was sitting on the bank of a large pond getting ready to cross over to the other side, a scorpion approached him and asked, “Mr. Frog, can you give me a lift to the other side? It’s kind of a long way for me to travel around the pond. Plus, I’m very light and you won’t even feel my weight.” The frog, surprised by this request that could end in his own death answered, “Mr. Scorpion, do you think I’m some kind of idiot. You just want to sting and kill me and fill your belly with my blood and whatever else you scorpions eat.”

            The scorpion then gave what seemed to be a logical answer, “Listen frog, do you think I’m suicidal or am on drugs? If I sting you while we’re crossing the pond, not only will you die but so will I because, and you know this, scorpions can’t swim!”

            The frog paused, thought a bit and then said, “You know, what you said makes a hell of a lot of sense. Hop on my back my comrade of the animal kingdom, and I will be a good neighbor and will safely carry you to the other side of the pond.”

            Well the scorpion hopped on his back and off they went to the other side of the pond making small talk along the way...
