From the Hearts of the Children I know that I‘m not all that you expect me to be but Mama, please try to understand I’m just discovering me You’ve brought me from birth to now and pretty much have me figured out But Daddy do you really know what I am all about You have instilled in me valuable principals and thanks for the morals too Although it’s not visible now, I do love and appreciate you I know that I get on your nerves with the way I act sometimes And I really don’t mean to annoy you with the music raps or rhymes There are just so much peer pressure and grown-up things for me to deal with If I could only find a way these burdens I would lift I’m just a young adult not quite ready for this world My mind’s not fully developed but yes it is a pearl I try to do the best I can in all my work at school But every time I face reality I lose sight of the rules There is so much calmness when I imagine these problems are not my own And so much peace when I pretend my heart is made of stone Oh, I guess I don’t really expect grown-ups to know or feel the sorrow Or the fear that lies within me being depended on for tomorrow God only can tell you how proud I want you to be of me But it isn’t always easy keeping my go als where I can see You’ve got to help me Mama, best of all be my friend I need your love, trust and reassurance until the very end I can accomplish anything Daddy, knowing that you believe in me Because it is within your love and understanding that I find the faith in me You see, I’m not the little devil that people say I am And I really don’t mean any disrespect when I don’t always say yes ma’am I’m just trying to grow up Daddy one day at a time But this world is so distractive and scary that it tangles up my mind You know what might really help is some modern day tough love talks When you sit down to tell me all of the do’s the don’ts and ought’s It would really help too Mama and Daddy if you tell me how it really is Because the more facts that I know the better I am able to deal Please don’t think I am too innocent to hear certain things come from you If I can’t come to you mommy and daddy can you guess who I’ll go to? So can we please sit now for a down-to earth honest chat? And will you please promise me nothing but the facts? Please don’t let me pass through my life feeling confused and so alone Because no matter how much I pretend Mama and Daddy…My heart isn’t made of stone.
