Isaiah Cry

It was not by chance that Jesus opened the Scroll, to the book of Isaiah chapter 61, this was His declaration of acceptance, a public statement of His intent and the prophecy of His life's purpose.  "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me."  This statement of intent began with a declaration of His reception of the great responsibility of working the anointing to heal the spirit, soul and body and which finally brought victory over death itself.

"Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captive, and the recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord."

  He made His public appearance, His public statement of purpose then He sat down, with everyone still staring at Him. He rolled up the scroll handed it to the minister caring for the books and sat down.

Every eye of everyone in the synagogue was fastened squarely on Him and He let them wonder.  According to the account of the incident, as written by Luke, there is no indication to suggest that Jesus even bothered to stand back up but merely spoke as He was seated, saying, “today this scripture has been fulfilled in your ears", right here in front of you, you've heard it for yourselves.  This is Christ's declaration that the Old Testament prophet's days are over, John the Baptist, being the greatest and the last of them all.  We do have New Testament Prophets today but the old way of doing business was over at that very moment.  Jesus had now officially announced that He had taken over the anointing, He is the anointed One, carrying all of the hope of Glory for all ages in His own God/human body, the new Temple.

The Kingdom of God now has moved out of the traditional tabernacles and into a man beginning with the man, Christ Jesus.  (The power of the entire Kingdom of Heaven now resides inside of a man.)  The anointing of God is now no longer found in the establishment of the religious, in robes, incense, temples and holy rooms, but has been established under the mercy seat of Christ, and He is now seated before all to witness, in the form of the Messiah, Christ our Lord to be poured out as He wills.  Everyone in the Tabernacle were now setting stunned and in awesome wonder, they perceived that this mere man, Joseph's son, the carpenter is presuming to be the Christ.  Seeing their astonishment Jesus continues, some day you will say this proverb to me, "physician heal thyself."  This is a Hebrew proverb directly connected to the coming Messiah, one of which everyone in Israel had knowledge about and they perceived it to be the war cry for the deliverance of the nation of Israel.  In Luke 4: 24-27 Jesus makes these outrageous statements, no Prophet is without honor except among his own people, making the point that He is that prophet.  He went on to say, (speaking of their unbelief) that's why there weren't any widows helped in your country, but instead God sent the prophet Elijah to go help a widow lady in Sidon.  And Naaman, the Syrian, wasn't from Israel either, and yet he was the only leper ever healed by Elisha, and not even one leper was healed in Israel.  This made the crowd furious, they forced Jesus out of the synagogue and were determined to kill Him by throwing Him off of a cliff.  Jesus, walking in the power of the Spirit, passed right through the crowd that was trying to kill Him but they never even saw Him leave.  What Jesus said that day, and what the crowd heard that day, were completely different ideologies.  Jesus came to give them hope and offer them the news that the true Sacrificial Lamb was here to deliver them, but the crowd had believed that their hope would come in another manner.  They were looking for a warrior King, they were waiting for a Joshua type of warrior, but instead God sent them
