Who is the person I call me
Is she nice and friendly and seriously me
Does she really like music
or is that just my kick
I wonder if you could tell me her favorite thing
for if she ever tells me, I’ll be sure to ring
Who is the person I call me
Can she dance like a butterfly
or is she shy
What’s her motivation—
determination or lack of self-expression
Who is she that calls herself me
Is she beautiful like spring
or maybe a cute earring
What does she prize—
things that make her eyes rise
or curly French fries
Who is the person she calls I
Is she lovely like a fruit-filled pie
Until that day when she and me meet
I’ll continue writing
focusing on us uniting.
My summers are long and the rain done gone
The sun no longer speaks to me
just stares at me and smiles
My baby went home to Pensacola
My summers are so long
lyrics to certain songs run on and on
Butterflies always on the go
and grasshoppers on my toe

bluebirds ask me what’s wrong
So, until that day
I’ll keep singing my song.
Yesterday I went looking for myself
and today I found me
A week ago I got lost in the store
however could it be
Sometime earlier I was held hostage
hidden behind some tree
Today I saw my reflection
and that was a sight to see.
Beautiful as the sun above
and gorgeous as a sparkling diamond
You made a leap into my body
and moved like the ocean’s waves
You pounded like a drummer for months
without sticks but hands and feet
You slept in warm security
and nestled softly between bones
Finally blinded by the light
you appeared
Naked by nature
your body delivered

About the Book
Green Butterfly is a collection of poetry paralleling a young woman’s life as she embraces self-identity, undergoes lessons of love, remembers life, reflects on issues, and welcomes change. Written between June 1999 (the author’s entrance into her senior year in high school) to June 2003 (the author’s entrance into her senior year in college), Green Butterfly is the culmination of the beautiful discovery of a woman’s voice translated into poetry. King’s poetry is masterful and allows her readers to follow her in flight. Long after the last poem is read, her words will transform into lasting memory.
About the Author
Kia Jackson King is undoubtedly visible through her poetry. She has creatively depicted personal thoughts, events, and wisdom in her debut book of poetry. Her words are soft and smooth, but written with the candor of a seasoned artist. Kia is an equally talented painter and artist as she is a poet. She is a 2004 graduate of Florida A&M University, with a degree in architecture. She is currently preparing to release her second book of poetry. She resides in Florida, with her husband Richard.
