About the Book

Children are fascinated by the past and this poetic interpretation of life in Tudor times makes History fun and accessible to everyone. From the very real Christopher Columbus and Henry VIII to the fictitious schoolboy named Jack and the nobleman, Sir Alec Smith-Brown, Sue Nield’s poems whisk the reader back to a colourful time of great change and discovery, with the added ingredients of both humour and pathos. Even her unlikely characters tell tales based on aspects of daily life, beliefs and superstitions at the time. These catchy rhymes provide a fun way to learn for the whole family and they’re a must for the classroom.

About the Author

Sue Nield is a primary school Headteacher who has been writing poetry to engage and capture her pupils' imaginations, for many years. In 'Raps and Rhymes about Tudor Times’, Sue has drawn on her experience of teaching hundreds of 7 to 11 year olds over the years, to create her own interpretation of this important and colourful period in history. Though some of her characters are fictitious, such as the schoolboy named Jack, and the nobleman, Sir Alec Smith-Brown, their tales are based on aspects of daily life and beliefs and superstitions at the time, and those that actually lived are brought to life accurately, with the added ingredients of humour and pathos. Most importantly, the poems have been successfully tried and tested on the audience for whom they were intended……… and teachers find them really useful too! Sue believes that children will always love reading books and finding things out from books, in spite of the information super-highway provided by the Internet and a multi-media world. There’s nothing quite like the feel of a real book. She firmly believes that poetry is a great way to help children learn in an inspiring, meaningful and memorable way whilst enjoying the rhythmic patterns and rhymes in each verse. Poetry is particularly accessible for children who prefer to read less, or for those who prefer pictures to words, because poetry creates its own magical images in every line and, unlike stories or text books, it's short enough to pick up and put down as you please. Sue believes that History fires children’s imaginations. The past holds a particular fascination for them but it needs to be brought to life and that’s exactly what she has achieved with this sparkling and uniquely informative collection of historical poems.
