Gatita We never owned a cat. We brought her home and loved her And watched her grow from a playful Ball of fluff into a beautiful independent cat Who still enjoyed life with the exuberance of a kitten. We never owned a cat. She came and went as she chose and Her manner said plainly that she was in charge. She walked around with a queenly air And lay down to rest wherever she chose, Usually right in the middle of whatever we were doing. She looked at me with an intelligence, that I With my human limitations, could never comprehend We never owned a cat, But we took her to the vet and had her spayed She walked around sore and stiff and as soon as she had healed enough She took out her stitches with her sharp little teeth. She forgave us, I think, but now there will never be any little balls of fluff with her playful nature and intelligent eyes. We never owned a cat And when I found her in the road I knew that she had been struck down While running free, enjoying liberty as I never could. And I knew that never again would she nudge us gently awake in the morning telling us, “It is time to get up.” We buried her in the back yard beneath an oak And walked away with spirits sore and stiff. We never owned a cat.

About the Author
I am retired from teaching Spanish, Social Studies, and a few times English, in Arkansas public schools. I studied at The University of Central Arkansas, and The University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I have enjoyed reading all my life , and throughout my life have written poems and short stories, mostly to entertain my children and grandchildren, but some have been published. I love the outdoors and am proud to live in The Natural State. I like change, and get to enjoy the beauty of all four seasons. My husband, Mike, and I live near the little town of Rose Bud in Central Arkansas. We live in a house we built ourselves. He did the hard work, and I decorated and did the landscaping. I have four children and twelve grandchildren. My nearest neighber is my daughter and her family, and life is never dull here, as she has three young sons. I'm not sure that being around children keeps you young, but it does keep you thinking and on your toes. I have found that the most profound statements often come from 'the mouths of babes.' Some of my most enjoyable and enlightening conversations are with those 'babes'
