Kirk began to sob. As he did, he tried to tell me what had happened. Apparently his dad had found his stash of magazines of naked men. I didn't even know something like that existed. He told me how his father started calling him a homo and a queer and no son of his was going to be that way. His dad took all the magazines out back and put them in the burn barrel and set them on fire. When he came back in the house he went to Kirk's room and the verbal abuse turned into physical abuse. Kirk's eye was all black and blue. He had scrape marks on his left cheek and he had a split lip. It was horrendous. It was terrifying that father could do such a thing to his own son. “Did this just start up or has this been going on for a while?” I asked Kirk. He couldn't answer. All he could do was sob. I didn't know what else to do, so I just wrapped my arms around him and put his head on my shoulder and held him. I physically held him the way he emotionally had held me when I needed it.

About the Book
Back in the day intertwines the process of four teenagers coming to grips with their sexuality. It takes you on their journey to love who they choose, to be loved back and be accepted for who they are. Along that journey the story shows how they managed when tragedy struck, personal relationships are tested and how family life was for these young men. Many of us who were teens during those years can identify with a number of issues that present themselves in the book. Take the journey with Mike, Kirk, Kyle and Philip beyond how society looked upon their road to finding out who they are and what they look for in life.
About the Author
Having spent his teenage years during the late 1960's and early 1970's, there were many obstacles and barriers to overcome living a secret life "in the closet" Society was not as accepting back then and one's being gay had to remain in the closet. We did not have the opportunities to discuss with friends and family our sexual orientation. We had to endure the vulgar and derogatory name calling that is not used to the same extent today.
