About the Author

Twice the winner of the Top Prize [2005 and 2009] in the annual Basho Festival, Paul Holman Faust, Jr. is originally from Illinois. After several changes of locale along the way, he eventually settled down in Japan where he became hooked on haiku.

The first experience with this literary form occurred when he was asked to proofread a book on the subject written by a Japanese scholar. Before he could fulfill that request, however, it was felt necessary to learn more about the subject.

The first discovery was that the basics are, like those for chess, actually quite simple. All that is necessary is to compose a verse of seventeen syllables with three natural divisions falling into a pattern of 5-7-5 syllables respectively and having a word or words to indicate the season in which it is set. Unfortunately, the second major discovery was that becoming proficient with this literary form is – like that for chess - not as easy as it seems.
