About the Book

Simeon and Sula’s First Day of School shares the excitement of two children who are attending school for the first time in Tanzania Africa. Their day begins before the sun comes up. They must fetch water from a distant river, find food for their animals and tend to their family needs before they even get their school uniforms on. They must walk many miles to school in African heat and arrive just as the bell rings to greet their headmaster. Learn why sitting on rocks and sharing pencils in the classroom is typical for both Simeon and Sula. Join them as they meet new friends and experience learning during their first day of school.

About the Illustrator
Ochu Eddy Sheggy lives in Dar es Salaam Tanzania Africa. He was orphaned at age 11 and was not able to continue his education due to lack of family and financial support. He discovered that drawing helped his heart heal from the loss of both of his parents. “Sheggy” was an only child and had become a street kid at an early age. He would wait for students in school to give him their used pencils and paper so he could draw. His talent was discovered as author Pamela Schwalbach was meeting with a friend of Sheggy’s upon one of her visits to Tanzania. Her manuscript was read to him and he began to cry. The story that Pamela writes depicts a very similar story to the beginning of his life. He used the few art supplies that were given to him and together they have combined their efforts to depict first- hand what this story is all about. Sheggy is also a talented musician. He plays guitar, sings, writes and composes music.
