CHAPTER FIVE “Social realities tend to gravitating towards social change or remain orderly persistent. For instance, a leader presiding over tyrannical mandate may develop social allergies against change. In both scenarios the use of appropriate discourse remains central. One key element permissible in political communication is the logic of transgression. It may erupt from the basin of anomic phenomena. The eruption as a form of input from the social movement could be seen as another counter-hegemonic power: once injustice has been perceived. Resources are often misallocated. Or they are not sufficient for the people or stakeholders who are competing for them either as interest or as a means of satisfying their conflicting needs. Yet conflict is a necessity to any developmental activity. What is crucial is the capability required by the politarian stakeholders (government and the governed) to devise effective conflict-resolution strategies through strategic communication anchored on negotiation and dialogue. This is done through the conventional judicial process or through the alternative dispute resolution methods. Another key concept in the lingo of political communication is transgression as located in the social chasm of maintaining structural rot even if social realities are no longer in its tolerating point contrasting the alternative resistance put up by the social movement as a form of countervailing force to the State-sponsored terror. Conflict is a form of social situation when agreement cannot be immediately reached with regard to allocations and/or disposal of resources. Human conflict situations are situations of discord and disharmony, of discontent and disillusionment and of dissatisfaction and disaffection. Conflict situations are inevitable in human experience, and they are not necessarily inimical to progress and development. Rather, they are situations that call for careful management and resolution (Unoh 1987). On genre of conflict, distinction is made between interpersonal and inter-group conflicts. These include religious, political, economic, occupational, ethnic, ideological, ethical, artistic, scientific, philosophical and territorial conflicts” (Sorokin 1928).

About the Author
He is a rhetorician. He holds a master’s degree in communication arts. He is the author of (1) Adventure of Sex in Power, (2) One Man’s Terrorist’s Another Man’s Freedom Fighter, and (3) Terrere’s Universe: A 2000-Year Adventure in Terrorism.
