One day, I was getting ready for my first day at a new school and my mom asked me if I wanted her to come with me to my class. I said “No, mom, I’ll be fine”. My mom is always trying to protect me from getting my feelings hurt. She said, “Why don’t you try something new this time?” I asked what she meant and she said “Ask someone something about themselves today. To my puzzled expression she said “You usually wait for people to come talk to you, but maybe they just don’t know what to say”. “Well, I don’t know what to say either”, I said “And some kids just think I am weird for talking to them when I do not know them.” Then my mom said something that really made sense to me: “I don’t understand why you expect people to be different than you are”, she said “Do you think that it’s any easier for people without wheelchairs to make new friends than it is for you?” Do you think that your chair makes you different from everyone else? If you do; maybe that is what they see in you.

About the Book
This project was originally designed as a teaching tool to be used by parents, teachers, students, and other professionals who have the wonderful opportunity to work with kids with special needs. It tells about the difficulties that students face in school and with peers from the perspective of the student. It is the perfect preparation tool for creating a welcoming environment for all learners. I can see it as a valuable tool for classroom teachers who are welcoming students with special needs in disability awareness training for all of the students in the classroom. I hope to decrease the difficulties encountered by students with and without disabilities in social and academic interactions.
About the Author
Stacie Kandra and her husband live in Stanley, North Dakota. Stacie worked in the medical field while going to college to become a teacher. Stacie began her professional teaching career as an Adapted Physical Education specialist. Through opportunities presented in one undergraduate class; she understood her calling to work with students with special needs. She is currently pursuing her second Master’s degree in Special Education. Working with kids is a calling. If you have the opportunity to love what you do for a living; you are truly blessed!
