Shaka`s Story

If one walked between the lily pond and James` house to the other part of the forest, one came to a small river which it was possible to cross on stepping stones. The gushing of the river in flood after heavy rainfall could clearly be heard from our cottage. Once across the river and under the thickly growing pine trees and brush, there was a hush, as though closed in. A gentle wind swayed the tops of the trees and the footsteps were deadened by the thick layers of pine needles and leaf mould. It suddenly became a sort of wooded cathedral and very lonely. Garbo loved walking there with me although she knew it was dangerous as stray men, poachers, might be encountered but her desire to explore with a disregard for danger ensured that it became a regular event. Garbo admits there was always an element of fear that was overcome by her love of the forest and walking in it. Finally, we came within sight of the cottage built on an outcrop of rock, the thunderous ocean below. It was elongated and not very prepossessing. There were a lot of windows with closed curtains and a double French door. Once we stepped inside it seemed like an Aladdin’s Cave. Oriental rugs covered the floors, some huge. There was a collection of Louis X1V furniture and Chinese lacquered cabinets. Semi darkness prevailed due to the shrouded windows. This created a magical atmosphere. The spectacle was enthralling for Garbo who loved antiques so much. The walls were adorned with beautiful works of art and antique gilt framed mirrors. This collection was a direct result of Ann having been associated with the high class antique trade in Johannesburg during her earlier years. I was shown the covered chair I would be allowed to sit on and I adhered to that rule. Ha! I thought this is going to be one exciting place to reside in. Amongst other things, Ann called me her “King” and I felt like one in those surroundings. Like the beautiful antiques Ann had acquired, so she wanted to acquire me. She called me “Sir” and a “Gentleman”. With my head held high and my crown like top-knot aloft I think I made a regal impression. I felt like a pretty good fella`. Sometimes, though, I had an inordinately stern look on my face. One needed to achieve this when carrying out “body-guard” duties. Having my hair done every six weeks kept me looking good and handsome. I always smelt lovely except when I went on my own to the beach where I could roll on rotting birds and dried up dead fish.
