Governor William Cheltenham inhaled deeply and slowly blew out the cigarette smoke. “Whose future are we speaking of? Your future? Yours and the Commonwealth’s future?” He took another draw on the cigarette and said as he exhaled the smoke, “Yours and America’s future?”
“The state of the world is primed for America to emerge with its unbridled potential,” Simon Kraft replied. “It is very important that we make the American people stronger and healthier. It will not be easy. America as a race, as a nation, must remain pure. Currently American bloodlines are being polluted."
Simon paused as he gathered his thoughts. "For one, marriage between the races weakens our stock, poisons our society and must continue to be forbidden."
"I agree," Uncle Billy said as he knocked the ash off the tip of his cigarette, "as do most of the states in the Union."
"We are being polluted by the continued influx of immigrants from middle Europe and the far off orient," Simon offered.
"Our immigration laws are some of the most strict laws in the world," Cheltenham replied. "I agree. Quotas need to remain low."
"We are being polluted by the weak, by degenerates, by the unfit," Simon said as he sat forward ever so slightly in his chair. "A vast number of individuals carry bad seeds for bad traits and these seeds need to be eliminated from society. These bad traits must be eliminated from the biological pool so to speak. It’s the Darwin thing, Uncle Billy. It has to do with heredity and evolution and science. By surgically sterilizing the undesirables, we continue to remove the defective and unwanted characteristics from our general population. We have addressed these issues in the Commonwealth and have become the nation’s standard bearer. America has taken notice to what we have been doing and what we have accomplished.”
“Not so much we, but you,” Cheltenham corrected him. “You’ve addressed these issues Simon, and the Commonwealth has followed your lead. You’ve become the standard bearer for our state and you have dragged us along with you. At your insistence we have passed the necessary laws that allow for the sterilization of the individuals with these bad traits that you describe. You operate several times each month to eliminate these problems and surgeons in eight of our Commonwealth's hospitals do likewise. Similar surgeries are being performed in several other states. They have listened to what you have said and done and like minded men in those other states are following your lead."
Cheltenham drew from his cigarette and then crushed it in the ashtray. “You are different from most men, Simon. You’re wired together differently. You are driven like no man I know. Okay. So you think America has a pollution problem and you now want to clean it up. How?”
"As Americans we must do on a national scale what we have been doing here in the Commonwealth," Simon explained. "We must continue to weed out the undesirables. We must do what is necessary to preserve and protect our American race. We have to stop these undesirables from poisoning, from tainting our American race."
"As you would call it, prevention," Uncle Billy interjected.
"In a way, yes," Simon replied. "On a grander scale, only by excluding and eliminating the weak and the unfit can America grow stronger and more powerful.”
“You truly believe you can reproduce nationally what you’ve implemented here in the Commonwealth,” Cheltenham asked.
“With all my heart,” Simon replied. “My goal is to allow for a better breed of Americans to emerge and to develop.”
“And you suggest that modern science will allow us to make these improvements to our society,” Cheltenham offered.
“Like no other time before us in the history of mankind,” Simon replied.
“How far are you willing to pursue this crusade? How much are you willing to invest of yourself in this quest?” Cheltenham asked.
“I’m willing to do whatever is necessary and follow this all the way to the top, Uncle Billy,” Simon replied in a manner that left little room for doubt.
“The top being the presidency of the United States?” Uncle Billy queried.
“If need be,” Simon replied.
