Distance? Time? I didn’t know. I sprawled into a ditch and lay there, oblivious to the squelching water seeping into my clothes. I was aware only of the lack of oxygen in my lungs and my blood and the burning throbbing lactic acid cramping my muscles. No sugar either, judging by the trembling. I swore at myself. “Get a grip” I gasped through chattering teeth. No one came. If they had started chasing me, they’d given up. My watch said 3 a.m. At 4.15, I stopped watching for them and, for the first time, wondered where my gang were. It was like coming back to real life after a nightmare. I looked down at myself. I’d be in big trouble with Mum. Wet mud all over my clothes. My ankle was on fire now. I scrambled out of the ditch, stepped forward, and it folded under me. How had I run on it before? How was I going to get home? And, with more panic, where was my bike?

Margot was born in Reigate, Surrey, but has moved around the country while growing up, living in a tiny hamlet in Wales, the much bigger city of Chester and the middle of nowhere in Surrey, which led to the writing of this book and what can happen when trying to make new friends in a new school. Having now lived in Redditch for twice as long as she has lived anywhere else, she can confirm that settling down is a calming experience." Life is now only exciting when I want it to be, carrying out my hobbies of sailing, cycling and hill walking", she says.
