Yes, they had used him. He had provided the adequate cover for their precious daughter until by the slightest of flukes he had discovered the truth. ‘Why did he have to come home so unexpectedly?’ Camilla wailed. Everything had been working so perfectly well. They were invited to all the elitist parties and the scandal making, muck raking gossips had been thwarted in their tracks. Her escapades in the past had been put down to adolescence and she was free of their sneering looks and caustic remarks. ‘Why did that lousy bastard have to spoil it all?’ She sobbed once more entwined in the fleshy cavernous arms of her lover. She had even suggested to Robert that they continue their marriage in name only following in the footsteps of their many titled friends. Even suggested a ménage a trois as an enticement, playing on his more basic and perverted instincts but surprisingly enough, Robert found these circumstances too much for him to accept and took solace in the fact that perhaps there was a spark of decency left in him after all, somewhere!
