This is Kevin. He is my friend. He has a desk; it is right next to mine. He has a book bag; it is the same as our friend Max. My friend Kevin has a hard time making good choices. In class he can use a loud voice or unkind words. This could be because he is upset or wants to get other’s attention. When this happens the teacher reminds him that he can take a break, count, or take deep breaths. After that, he can use his words and tell us how he feels and what he needs in a calm way.

About the Book
My Friend Kevin is told from a classmate’s point of view about his friend with an emotional disability. The student explains some of his friend’s characteristics that can accompany an emotional disability, situations that may occur, and strategies that can be used in the classroom. My Friend Kevin is designed to help teachers explain emotional disabilities to students in a way that promotes understanding and fosters positive peer relationships in their classrooms.
About the Author
Eve Pollard Lawrence received her bachelor’s in psychology from Radford University and her master’s in special education from Old Dominion University. She works as learning specialist in Yorktown, Virginia. Whenever possible, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two wonderful daughters, Leah and Zoe. Kelly Warner is an education specialist working with sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders in San Diego, California. She has worked as a teacher for fifteen years across all grade levels. She is married to a US Coast Guard officer and is the mother of four amazing kids—Malayah, Milo, Mason, and Max. During her free time, she enjoys watching her kids play sports, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. Eve and Kelly share a passion for teaching and loving students of all abilities. They hope to provide teachers with a positive way to prepare their students for some of the situations that occur and characteristics that can accompany children with emotional disabilities through a book that is easy for children to relate to and understand.
