As Jake and Wilt were getting ready to leave their motel room, on Friday morning, Jake got a call from Agent Wright. Based on his conversation with Jake on Thursday night, Brandon and Harvey Caldwell would be joining Jake and Wilt at the airport. Jake explained to Wilt about their company. “Brandon got extra agents to help with the search. With the two extra bodies, we’ll get through the airport in a day or two.”
“Sounds good to me.”
They met the FBI men at the 29th street entrance. As they were telling the FBI where they left off, Jake looked about a half mile down the access road and noticed what appeared to be two vehicles parked at, or near the flight tower. When they got to the spot they had stopped the night before, Jake let Wilt out, and said he’d be right back. He wanted to take donuts, that he had purchased as a sort of ‘peace offering’, down to the security shack. He pulled up as Cpt. Larry Greene was fumbling with the lock on the security office, cursing as he did so. “I swear I’m gonna put my foot up his ass!”
“Whoa, Cap! You’re not talking about me, are you?”
“Wha…? Oh, Miller. It’s you. No, it’s that lame-brain Lenny! That asshole is supposed to open this place up at 8:00 am, sharp! Here it is, a quarter to nine, and the office is still closed. On top of that, I’m gonna have to make a pot of coffee, before I can get a cup. And, if my guess is right, you brought us donuts, and now I can’t even offer you a cup for fifteen minutes.”
“That’s fine Cap. I had my breakfast already. I just wanted to drop these off. Lenny drives the brown Toyota parked out front yesterday?”
“Yeah, when it’s running.”
“Well, he’s probably in with Tony Utah. The Toyota is parked next to Tony’s Jeep, at the flight school, behind your building.”
“Son of a bitch! We left out of here last night, 5:00 pm. Tony’s jeep was there, and that asshole Lenny pulled over, to go see him. Last time that happened, them two got all drunk, or high, or whatever, and Lenny strolled in here the next day, at 10:30 am, not worth a damn. I had to send him home that day.”
“Well, look Cap., take these donuts, then take a deep breath, open your office, and put your coffee on. I’ll stop next door, and chase Lenny over here. I wanted to say hi to Tony Utah anyway.”
“Really? You’re all right, Miller. Hey, what kind of donuts did you get?”
“A dozen old fashioned Dunkin’ Donuts.”
“See, now that’s smart thinking on your part. People get seven, eight different kinds of donuts, all you’re doing is asking for trouble. Somebody gets pissed off because somebody else ate the last jelly donut, or you didn’t get somebody else’s favorite. Your way, nobody’s feelings get hurt. Everybody gets the same donut. You want one, or you don’t.”
“You’ve given this a lot of thought, haven’t you? Well, look, enjoy, and I’ll send Lenny over.”
Jake walked into Tony Utah’s Flight School and Plane Charter and found the place empty. After calling out, he went through the back door, which led directly into Tony’s airplane hangar. The first thing Jake noticed was that there were only two planes in the hangar. He remembered Tony saying he had three Cessnas, gassed up, and ready to go. As he rounded a partition, he came upon two bodies. Tony Utah, and Lenny Baldwin both had their throats slashed, from ear to ear. The blood on the ground that they lay in had mostly dried up. This told Jake that they died sometime before midnight. He started to back out of the room, so as not to disturb anything, when he noticed something positioned on Tony Utah’s chest. He walked over to find the picture of Harry Reeves that he had left Utah. Under the picture now were the words ‘LEAVE ME ALONE, OR THERE WILL BE MORE!!’ As he backtracked into the flight school office, he noticed a pool of blood behind Utah’s counter, that he didn’t notice when he came in. He called Brandon Wright. “Brandon! Grab Wilt and Harvey, and get down here, to the Flight School!” As he ran into the security office, he yelled for Capt. Greene. “Cap! Lenny and Tony Utah are both dead! Call it in!”
“Jesus, Mary, and St. Joseph! Will do, Miller.”
“After you call it in, secure the Flight School. Nobody gets in before the Forensic Team. The FBI will be here in a minute. Tell them I’m in the control tower!”
“Roger that!”
