Captain Morgan interrupted Matthew’s thoughts. "If this is Abraham Hollister’s son, Colonel Arnold, then he is no spy." "I would agree," Colonel Arnold replied. "But we still need to determine this young man is who he says he is. Ah, here comes Hollister." With a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, Matthew looked up to see Aaron Burr leading his father toward the group. Surprise, then anger crossed Abraham Hollister’s face when he caught sight of his youngest son. Matthew’s father halted and brought himself to attention in front of Colonel Arnold. "You asked for me, sir?" he said. "Yes, Hollister," Colonel Arnold replied. "Is this boy your son?" Keeping his eyes downcast, Matthew saw his father look briefly in his direction and then back at Colonel Arnold. "Yes, sir," replied Matthew’s father. "That is my youngest son, Matthew." "Good," responded Colonel Arnold enthusiastically. "I am glad he is not a spy." He smiled broadly at Abraham and Matthew. "And now we have another volunteer for the expedition." "Sir, " Matthew’s father protested. "I must respectfully disagree. I wish to send my son home immediately." "I am afraid that is impossible, Hollister," replied Colonel Arnold. "We can not return to port now, and the boat will not be returning to Newburyport after we disembark at Gardiner. Your son must stay." Matthew’s heart leapt. He was not going to be sent home!

About the Book
Matthew Hollister longs for adventure. When he learns of the American military expedition to conquer Canada, Matthew is determined to join, despite his father’s prohibition. After stowing away, Matthew becomes a member of the expedition led by Colonel Benedict Arnold. Along with Aaron Burr, Daniel Morgan, and his famous riflemen, Matthew quickly discovers that severe weather and many miles of desolate wilderness lay ahead. Out of supplies, and faced by one obstacle after another in the wilderness, will Matthew and the expedition survive the march to Canada?

Christina Semmens has a Masters degree in history and is a former social studies teacher. When not writing historical fiction, she is busy being wife, mother, church volunteer, and youth hockey coach. She lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado with her husband, Paul, and their son, Sean.
