As Willie Mae reminisced and prayed, Thomas checked out the area where Mr. Carlton was building new homes. There he spotted Bro. He waited a block away until Mr. Carlton and the rest of the men left for the day. Bro gathered his belongings and began walking home. Glancing up from the ground, he noticed a police car coming in his direction. Fearing that it could be his dad, he ran into the thick woods and hid among the bushes, watching until the police car cruised by. When the street was deserted he continued walking along until the police car pulled up from behind– he was trapped. It was Bro’s dad. Yelling from the car window, he commanded, "Get in, boy. Where do you think you are going?" "Dad, I’m coming from school. I promised the teacher that I would help her grade some papers." "Boy, you are lying. But you will learn not to lie to me no more. Now get in." Bro reluctantly slipped onto the front seat of the cruiser for the deathly silent ride home. That evening after work, Thomas Turner took Bro to an abandoned house and beat him with his black stick. He beat him bad. He then drove Bro home, ordered him out of the car in front of their house, and left. Bro could barely walk. Dot, seeing her brother, screamed out for her mama, ran outside to grab her brother, who collapsed in her arms. Willie rushed out of the house to their side. She searched her boy’s face. His eyes were swollen shut. "Lord, boy, who did this to you–where have you been?" "Mom, Daddy beat me," Bro whispered, clinging to his mama’s dress. "Dot, go quick and get Mrs. Sara Lee, she know what to do." Willie sopped up the streaming facial blood with her clean apron. "Hang in, Bro. Dot gone to get help. Lord, Thomas will pay for this!"
Floyd, torn, hurt and confused, decided to invite his friends over while his parents were out. Nine kids showed up, high and loaded down with herb. They smoked some more before deciding to go outside, where Dap pulled out a gun and showed it off. "Where did you get that?" "Gary, I been had this gun. I have to protect myself from my enemies. No one fucks with me and gets away with it. "Can I see it?" Gary asked. "Yeah," Dap answered. "This is a nice piece." Gary started playing around with the gun. Dap screamed, "Man, be careful, it’s loaded!" The warning came too late–Gary had already squeezed the trigger. During spring break of her senior year, Lisa Ann visited her sister in Atlanta, Georgia. As she and Vernita were walking through the mall, Lisa Ann revealed that she was pregnant. Vernita was shocked and had to sit on the nearest bench. She soon recovered enough to question her sister about the circumstances. "How could you let this happen? Didn't it ever cross your mind to use some protection–or just wait? My God, you are too young to be a mother."' "I know, that’s why I’m here. I want to get an abortion." "An abortion! Does Mother know that you’re pregnant?" "No! And my boyfriend gave me the money for the abortion. Please, Sis, I need your help."

Irene Nottingham-Slappy was born in Macon, Georgia. She resides with her
husband, John Cecil Slappy Sr. (26 years of marriage), in Junction City,
Kansas.
The
author believes that as you enter the saga of the Turner family history, you
will recognize the importance of family legacy and how the impact of each
generation affects the lives...present and future...of each person’s nature and
spirit. You will explore the triumph of family impact as the Turners struggle
to survive the challenges of life. By focusing on family unity and rebuilding
of the family throne for a better future, the Turner family dreams come true.
Ms. Slappy is a graduate of
Northeast High School and Los Angeles Community College. She earned an
Associate Degree, General Studies in Business Management graduate of Central
Texas College, Fort Riley, Kansas. Employment is with Department of Defense,
United States Army Civil Service, and 1st Personnel Service Battalion of Fort
Riley, Kansas. Occupation is Office Automation Military Personnel Assistant.
She has received many awards
for recognition of her outstanding performance. Her acknowledged awards are an
Achievement Medal for Civilian Service, Officially Commended for Exemplary
Performance, Sustained Superior Performance, Certificate of Achievement for
Exceptional Performance, and community organizational Outstanding Distinguished
Services.
Inher
leisure time, Ms. Slappy has authored the books TIL DEATH DO US PART: A MARRIAGE SURVIVES THE STRESS OF MILITARY LIFE,
and GENERATION IMPACT: AN AMERICAN

She is a member and Past Matron of St. Tabitha Chapter, Order of Eastern Stars;
member of Heriones of Jericho; Daughter of Isis; Cyrenes of Prince Hall
Affiliation; Free and Accepted Masonry of Kansas Jurisdiction; and NAACP.
