"A Narrow Escape"
"Darrian, come here please," King Tretchin called. The green skinned Millenia, chief advisor to the King walked over to where the King stood.
"I want you to take Dolran to my relatives near your homeworld," the King said.
"Is there something you want done while we are there?" Darrian asked.
"Keep him safe," the King replied forcefully.
"Have you considered allowing Princess Balaama to go there with him instead?" Darrian inquired.
"I just want the two of you to go. Dolran is waiting for you in the launch bay."
"Your majesty,..."
"Go, Darrian. Now."
"Yes, your majesty." Inwardly, Darrian was grumbling. He was supposed to let Darrian finish her assortment of options and best recommendation. The Millenia were the ones who really gave the orders and everyone else just listened. Everyone knew that. She joined Prince Dolran in the launch bay and both launched their ships off Alferron and into space without incident.
Krak was behind 18 Voltin fighters. They were on an intercept course with Alferron and Krak recognized them as the elite guard-the best of the best of the Voltin military. Krak was the most ferocious and deadly warrior the Kalvin race had ever fielded. He had a home on Alferron. Eighteen fighters of a hostile world were headed towards his home. That alone caused him to leave his present mission and shadow them. Krak began transmitting visuals of his various visual fields back to First, his commander.
"Get out of there, Krak," First commanded. First wanted Krak at home on Alferron if this turned into a full-scale war. Krak did not answer his commander. The Voltin fighters were headed towards the planet from the direction of Darrian’s homeworld. The Voltin home planet was far away on the other side of Alferron. Krak was monitoring their communications and found that no ship transmitted a single word. In his long-range viewer, he saw something that halted any chance of him leaving the area. He was certain that the fighters saw it also.
"Yes, I am receiving visual as well. Now get yourself out of there!" barked First in response to Krak’s voice transmission.
But Krak held his position. Was General First completely blind?
At that moment, King Tretchin walked into the room where First was.
"Aren’t those Voltin fighter ships?" he inquired.
"Yes, your majesty," First replied without taking his eyes off the screen.
"What direction are they headed from?" the King asked.
"Sector 251, your majesty," came the reply. "No! You will not wait! Krak, I said to retreat now. That is an order!" shouted First into the communications relay once again.
"Delay that order!" shouted the King. First turned to regard the King.
"My son and Darrian are headed into that sector!" the King said, as he pointed to the screen in the upper left hand corner showing the two craft headed towards the fighters.
"Why wasn’t I informed of this?" First demanded loudly.
"That is what I am here for. The less that knew about it, the better." Then, without warning, the screen went completely blank.
"Krak, come in," First called out. But only static filled the air. The fighters had thrown a dampening field over the entire communications area. Krak no longer received messages from the general, but he knew what he had to do. He attempted to transmit visuals from the viewer from behind him on a side band. His commander would receive visual only, but it was something. He still wasn’t sure if it would overcome the dampening field. Prince Dolran and Darrian were headed right at the fighters. And they were alone. Krak knew that despite Darrian’s many skills, she would never stand a chance. For he had personally trained Darrian in combat tactics. He knew what she could and couldn’t do. And though Dolran’s skill at the helm was excellent, he, too, was still way overmatched. At the communications center, the King turned to First. The visuals Krak was transmitting were coming through. They were somewhat snowy, but they did come through.
"What is he doing?" the King asked as the visuals began to come closer to the rear of the last 7 fighters.
"The one thing he does best," replied First as he watched intently. They both continued to watch the viewer, as the ships coming into Alferron grew ever closer to Krak. Krak was in a mode that blanketed his signature. The dampening field actually helped him remain invisible to his enemies. He readied his ship to go to combat mode. This would make him visible and transfer all available power to weapons and defense shielding. He powered up all of his weapons systems and prepared the first volley. He spoke no words and offered no commentary. He was locked in his focus on the complete destruction of his enemy. His signature on the radar screens appeared for only a moment. The Voltin pilots didn’t even have time to react. Krak began the sequential fire and scored direct hits on all of his chosen targets. Seven of the ships erupted into fireballs. The remaining 11 ships split into several different directions. Krak had his flight eyepieces adjusted for full 3 dimensional recognition and knew where every ship was at all times. He flew through the debris and took off immediately after the two closest to him. They were flying evasively in an attempt to get the others in position to take Krak out. Krak anticipated their moves and sent the guided laser type weapon in a criss-cross pattern of fire into the path of the fighters. They exploded a moment later. Then Krak quickly moved downward and spun his fighter in several different directions and rotations as the remaining 9 Voltin fighters converged on Krak firing everything they had at him. Krak was unable to return fire due to the evasive maneuvers. The view out his front viewer that was displayed back on Alferron was making the King sick to his stomach. For the King was not a pilot. He decided instead to go back to his room and attempt telepathic contact with Darrian and Dolran. He left with his 8 guard entourage as First smiled at the courage and deftness of Krak in his fighter. Krak continued his dizzying twist and turn motions and was finally able to come out of his maneuvers and fire off one shot. It hit dead center causing a massive burst of fire and debris. Krak turned and flew directly at the center of the explosion. The three ships behind him followed immediately. But then they realized that they were flying into a fireball and pulled up and two were shredded by debris. That left only 6 Voltin fighters when Darrian and Dolran flew into the war zone. They had been without the aid of sensors for many minutes now and were flying on only visual. Darrian knew at once that they were in a firefight and vectored off with the prince following closely. But all 6 ships had recognized the signature of the crafts that Darrian and Prince Dolran flew, just as Krak had feared. They also veered away from Krak and towards Darrian and Prince Dolran. Immediately, Darrian and Dolran threw their ships into evasive maneuvers. The remaining fighters followed t
