About the Author

Savon was born in Bakersfield,California in 1950.

He started writing when he was seven years old. His first piece, a poem about Louis Armstrong, won him a ribbon of achievement for best poem and recital. Drugs and crime took Savon in and out of California prisons and jails for over thirty years.

In jail, Savon studied many Black authors. His prison time became a spiritual and artistic journey because his passion for learning was so intense.

Once Savon was released, he went to Compton College on a student loan and studied sociology and psychology. It was very hard because of his drug use and alcoholism, but during that time he managed to achieve another award for Black poetry. His addiction landed him in and out of prison until 1992. Then the light went on; three years later, he found recovery.

Throughout those years and throughout his addiction, Savon never relented in his desire to create. To express the pains and joys, the heartfelt sorrow, yet — always hope. A commitment undying in the life of a man. A commitment undying in the life of Savon Lindsay.
