The complexity of high technology products coming from various manufacturers changing so quickly means an engineer could spend his or her whole time on training courses. In view of the cost of travelling, accommodation and ‘down – time’, very careful selection of training and development courses are necessary. One should make sure that the product is one likely to be used a lot or uses principles and techniques that have a wide application.
The responsibility of the management team is to identify the development needs of employees. It is up to the employee to identify the learning theories required. The flow diagram (fig. 2), which illustrates how employees and the manager of the organisation can take positive steps forward to identify appropriate training and development needs.

The technical personnel’s main role in any organisation is to provide technical and scientific support, and to maintain the highest engineering standards; this includes the essential provision of up-to-date testing and measuring devices.
The need for a collaborative and co-operative culture must not be overlooked.

About the Author
Frank Sikapa MSc., PEng., FIDiagE Frank Sikapa was the first Black person of African origin to have worked in the field of Dialysis in Great Britain and the whole of Europe. He, together with the pioneers, started the dialysis complex at St. Leonard’s Hospital, London. He joined the team in August 1977. He lectured Post-Graduate Students in Dialysis Servicing, Organization and maintenance of in-house and the outreach system for the Medical Electronics College of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, (London University), collaborating with The World Health Organization to provide Training, Scientific support, research and Development in Health Care Equipment. Now, Frank has written the ultimate guide in technical skills, awareness, and positive attitude in his specialized field.
