Colonel David Voelker, former branch
linguistics head of Hitler's Schutzstaffel,
survivor (except for part of his right
leg) of the Russian front, and current commandant of the P.O.W. camp outside of
Schwenningen, stood before the camp's communications
center while his radioman attempted to bring in their control unit in
Wurttemberg. The sky was already overcast with a chill drizzle and approaching
twilight, and the men were only too well aware that, if the enemy continued its
now daily routine, nightfall would bring with it renewed waves of Allied planes
and their highly effective bombs.
