Never Give Up on Love
Daren left. Melba sat stunned and silent. She couldn’t believe that he had given up so easily. He didn’t even try to work things out. He said that he didn’t like being married because being married was too hard. He had only been married a week. How could it be that hard and such a problem after a week.
Melba got up, washed her face, pulled on a pair of blue jeans and a tee shirt. She got in her car and drove, barely able to see the road through her tears. She had to talk to her Mother. She needed to understand why this kind of thing always happened to her.
When she came into her parent’s house, Helen could see her red puffy eyes and she knew that Melba had been crying.
“Momma”, she said, “ It’s over. My marriage is over. Daren said he doesn’t want to be married any more because it’s too hard. He can’t satisfy both his Mother and me too and she needs him more than I do. Have you ever heard anything so crazy? How can I compete with his Momma?”
“Oh honey I’m sorry”, said her Mother. “ This is what I meant when I said you needed to know Daren better. Six months just isn’t enough time. I’m afraid that you and Daren are strangers to each other in some very important ways and you certainly didn’t know his Mother, Azel. Maybe if you had met her before the two of you got so serious you would have seen the relationship Daren has with his Mother and you never would have married him.”
“ Momma, how can a grown man be influenced so completely by his evil Mothert? And why does she hate me so much?” asked Melba.
“ She doesn’t know you Melba. She doesn’t hate you, she hates herself?” said Helen. “ I’ve met Black people like her. She hates being Black. When she looks at Daren, she can pretend that she looks like him. Azel is a sick individual.
“ I’ve never met anybody like her. She has poisoned her son against me. She acts like she wants him for herself.” said Melba.
“Well she does want him for herself”, said Helen. “He tried to break away from her by marrying you, but he was just too weak. She raised him to love only her. She literally put Daren in his Father’s place in her heart. It’s almost incestuous; and she couldn’t allow Daren to slip away from her too. She had to pull him back to her. Daren is sick too. I hate to say it, but it’s true. Their relationship is unnatural and very sick.
Oh Momma, why do I always involve myself with losers? I give up.” said Melba.
“Never give up on love, Melba”, said Helen, “ I promise you, Honey, there is a Mr. Right out there for you and you will meet him when you least expect it.”
“I don’t believe it,” cried Melba, “I think it is my fate to spend the rest of my life by myself.”

Standing next to Connie Ann and David was a tall, dark good looking man. He eyed LaKeya starting with her beautiful hairdo, her flawless makeup, her beautiful outfit that draped her body like that of a super model. As if he were making an obvious comment, he said, “ What kind of fool would stand up a beautiful woman like you?”
Suddenly lost in two gorgeous, soulful brown eyes that showed concern for her predicament, LaKeya said, “ I beg your pardon. What did you say?”
Connie said, “ Let me introduce you to my big brother, Desmond Traymont. This is my best friend LaKeya Stone. She is having boyfriend problems.”
“ I’m sorry to hear that,” said Desmond, in a soft sexy voice, “ Well, I hope everything turns out alright. Affairs of the heart can be hurtful sometimes. Those people who are suppose to love you always figure out a way to hurt you. I wonder why.?”
As LaKeya shook Desmond ’s hand holding it longer than she had planned, she said in a shaky voice, “ I don’t know the answer, Desmond, I wish I knew.”
Then suddenly she realized that this stranger was a member of the same species that Tyrone belonged to. He was a man and all of them were on her ---list tonight.

Never Give Up On Love:
Melba Martin and Tyrone Webster have both been hurt by unfaithful spouses and ugly, hurtful divorces. Feeling like “burnt children dreading fire”, they both give up on love and are determined to go it alone. They place themselves in a church with very few Black parishioners . This is a place where they thought that love connections would be difficult. While Melba and Tyrone were guarding their hearts, they were oblivious to the fact that destiny had put powerful circumstances in place which included an intervention by friends and family members who were hard at work trying to convince Melba and Ty to give love another try. .

Phyllis Jean Robinson is a retired teacher with a Master of Science in Education from Chicago State University. She has previously written four other books: Never Give Up On Love, Royalty In A Cedar Box, Love's Comfort and Joy, and Grace and Mercy Brought Us Through. She resides in Chicago with her family which includes her mother, Ann Brown; two grown daughters Kelley Baker and Belinda Jones, a son-in-law , Rev. Melvin Jones and a beautiful granddaughter, Vashti Kaylis Baker. Phyllis is a member of Trinity United Church of Christ where she served for several years on the Trustee Ministry and she is a member of the Hurston-Hughes Writers Ministry. She is also a member of the Chicago Black Authors Network and Tau Gamma Delta Sorority Inc., a national business and professional women' s organization.
