Somewhere inside my imagination, there is a beautiful pink -sanded beach with green waters, where family members who have passed away live in a peaceful state of bliss—swimming, laughing, dancing, and swaying in the warm sun. I imagine those family members who have gone to the other side as mermaids, beautiful mermaids in the sand. Mermaids seem to have a magical quality to transcend both worlds—the world of the living and the world of the dead. In my mind, they are peaceful, joyous, filled with love and hope. In my lifetime, I have lost three family members on my mother’s side of the family—Grandpa Melvin, Uncle Mark, and Grandma Dorothy. All of them had brilliant creative minds and spent a lot of their free time writing poetry, articles, or short stories. In this book, I attempt to bring together literary works of some living family members and some family members who have passed away.
Some of the family writers in this book published articles in journals or magazines, some of the family writers kept their works hidden and some of us still write professionally to this day. But what we all have in common is the love for literary works, the passion for poetry, and our heritage as a family in lights!
When it comes to my family, I have several fond memories involving the love for writing and literature. I remember hearing my grandmother read me her poems before bedtime—as if she intuitively knew that I would someday write poetry like her. I spent hours with grandma in her

About the Book
Mermaids in the Sand is an anthology that includes three generations of selected literary works from Sarah Militz-Frielink’s family—interwoven with her own writings. Mermaids in the Sand blends together the writings of some of Sarah’s living family members along with the writings of some family members who have passed away. In this book, Sarah embarks on a whimsical journey sharing the struggles of her Grandparents growing up in an orphanage, the triumphs of her Grandfather’s medical career, and some life lessons she learned from different family members. Inside this book, one will find mini-biographies of the contributing writers, chapters of poetry, short stories, and reprinted articles—along with snapshots from Sarah’s family photo album.
