[Sinksalot] “Well ---- let’s see what we can see.”
He puts his right eye to the eyepiece. All he can see is the entrance to the harbor, but the view is clear.
“Ok **** -- turn the wheel. Make your wheel revolutions only one per minute. We don’t want to overdo it on our first try.”
**** puts his hands about two thirds of the way up on the wheel and pulls down. It is hard for him to gauge just how long a minute is. He pulls on the wheel and the smaller wheel, which is attached to the propeller shaft, turns much faster. The propeller turned just as it should --- but they feel the craft moving backwards!
[Sinksalot] “HOLD IT! Something is wrong. We area not moving forward. The propeller must have been put on backwards. You are going to have to pull the wheel upward instead of down. That will make the propeller turn the right way.”
**** does as he is told. He puts his hands at the bottom of the big wheel and pulls upward. This is harder than pulling it downward. Nevertheless it works. The boat starts to move forward now. When they have moved about one hundred feet, Sinksalot pulls the rope that turns the rudder so the boat turns to the right. He continues to look through the scope. Slowly the horizon moves to the left. THERE! There it is. The second ship. He returns the rudder to its forward position. The vessel continues to slowly move toward the ship. **** keeps the wheel turning as he has promised, but it has not been very long yet.
[Sinksalot] “Now that’s a sight for yer, by golly.”
Then he sees the men on deck at the capstan. Soon the sailors will be raising the anchor and lowering the sails. The ship is getting underway! There is no time to lose.
“Uh oh! They are making ready to sail. No time to waste. Faster!”
**** puts all of his muscles into it.
Formats Book Details In Defense of the Empire / ****'s (Star's) ADVENTURE - Book 3 is the third book in the series for readers age 9 to 14 and older. It continues the saga of the hero THAT YOU, THE READER, MUST NAME. For this adventure our young hero will have to travel far from his valley. A seafaring man, Sinksalot, has come to the village near the Palace to see what kind of place it is. Someday he will retire from the sea and is looking for a good place to live in retirement. He has a wonderful dream. He has had this dream for many, many years and yet is still unfulfilled. **** learns of Sinksalot's dream while visiting some friends and gets very excited about it. He meets Sinksalot in the town square and before long a new adventure is in the making. This adventure is like no other **** has experienced. He must endure situations with a huge reptile, the big cats, deep water, powerful explosions and more. Our hero will have to deal with dangers that he cannot possibly imagine. One of these dangers includes a marvelous new boat. A boat like no other that is known. All that, plus adding his part in saving the neighboring Emperor's throne from being taken away by a greedy and evil thinking Baron, makes for a really good adventure. There are many new and colorful characters. Just as in the two previous books in the series, this book has many words that may be new to the younger reader. They are in bold print and are explained in the glossary at the end of the story. Text boxed "life lessons" are written throughout the story too. WHAT WILL YOUR NAME FOR **** BE?
