It is December the twenty-fourth, and it is a busy day for Karen. She is preparing foods for Christmas dinner at her parent’s house. “Sweetie”, Jason says while coming down the stairs. He enters into the Kitchen and kisses Karen on the cheek. I am going to visit moms, and the kids want to come along.
When are you leaving? In about twenty-minutes, we should be back around six o’clock. I should be finished cooking and cleaning by that time. I love you sweetie, I love you too. “Mother,” daddy is taking us to see grandma. I heard, so have a good time. Do you have your hat and gloves Jr.? Yes, mother I do. Okay give mother a hug.
Megan take care of your brother. Yes, mother I will. Jason don’t forget to tell your mother, I will visit her in two weeks. What is going on in two week? Didn’t I tell you, I will be attending a meeting in Baldwin in two weeks? No, you didn’t tell me. I am sorry baby so much is going on; I didn’t mean to leave you out. It was now two o’clock, it had been three hours since Jason and the children had left.
Karen put the finishing touches to the desserts and cleaned the other rooms in the house. She knew Jason and the children would be back in two hours. I need to cook something for them. She started toward the Kitchen, when the phone rung. Hello! Mrs. Lewis- Yes. I am sorry to inform you that your husband and children were in an accident.
What? How? Where? An 18- wheeler ran over them in between Homestead and West Homestead. Are they alright? No, they are not. What are you telling me? I am sorry. Oh! My God, Why? Why? Karen dropped the phone, began to screaming and crying. Her world was Jason and the kids, and that world was gone. It was now six o’clock and Karen stopped crying.
She knew that she would have to break the news to Patricia. She picked up the phone slowly wishing that this was a dream. She could wake up and everything would be alright. The phone rang twice Patricia answered. Hello! Hello. Karen started crying again. Karen what is wrong? Jason and the children were in an accident in between Homestead and West Homestead. What? Are they alright? No they are gone. No, No. Patricia started to cry.
They stayed on the phone for thirty-minutes sobbing. Now, Karen had to break the news to her parents. She wanted to go over to break the news in person. She drove over to her parent’s house in a daze. How would she get through this? She knocked and her mother appeared at the door. Hello baby. Where is Jason and the children? They are gone mother. Karen started to cry. What is wrong child? They were in an accident in between Homestead and West Homestead. Mother an 18-wheeler took my family.
Oh! Karen. Mrs. Stewart hugged her daughter tight and felt her pain. Hello! Mr. Stewart said. I thought; we weren’t going to see you until tomorrow. Daddy my family is gone. What do you mean gone? They were killed in an accident this afternoon. No, baby I am so sorry. How? An 18-wheeler ran over them. Oh! Oh my God. Karen spent the night with her parents; she didn’t feel comfortable staying at her house tonight.
She barely slept. She could not figure out why this happened to her. It was now Christmas morning and Karen felt the same as yesterday. She continued to wonder how she would go on. She sat up in the bed for twenty-minutes, until she heard her cell phone ring in her purse.
She got it out of her pursue and looked at the screen. It was Michelle. How could she forget to tell her friends? Michelle Weller and Linda Blackmon were her friends since college. They told one another everything, and didn’t have to worry about it getting out to anyone.
