What if you went to your school counselor for academic advice on choosing relevant courses for your intended career?  What if she simply handed you the school catalogue and told you to close your eyes and point to a course, any course?  What if after you questioned her counseling techniques she told you to, “relax and just do it, the educational system will find a way”?  How about if your computer crashed and you needed to call a technician?  What if, after you explained to her what happened, she pleasantly told you with the utmost confidence to switch on the power and let technology take care of the rest?  No instructions, no diagrams or blueprints…Just do it!!!

     Clearly, the NIKE™ approach does not work in these instances and neither will it work when it comes to choosing what you hope to be your lifelong companion.  We should adopt a “just think about it first” mindset as a substitute for the “just do it” attitude.  Moreover, we should practice a “just let me do a little research or read a few books and articles on the subject first” approach before we get married. 

     Entering into a relationship with blind, reckless ambition fueled only by unfounded marital guidelines and expectations will eventually have the same outcome as entering into any investment venture ignorantly and without proper preparation.  Some people who blindly play the stock market get lucky and obtain untold fortune.  However, way more often then not, less than well-informed investors end up squandering their life’s savings on a whim and a dream.  Those who consult ill-informed marriagebrokers fare no better in their relationships. 

     Many of us spend years in school preparing for our careers.  Yet, we spend only a few minutes, maybe a few hours preparing for our relationships.  It is no wonder why the divorce rate in this country is over 50%.  Unlike many vocations where we can learn on the job, marriage does not afford us the same luxury.  This is primarily due to the fact that by the time we receive adequate experience in matrimony, many of the breeches that occur in our relationships are far beyond repair—and all of the training in the world cannot prepare us to work out an irresolvable marriage.
