Yeshua began to read from the scroll of Yesha'yahu (Isaiah) 61:1. This passage is a Messianic expectation of an Anointed One who would arise to proclaim freedom and release. After completing the reading with its appropriate blessings, He rolls the scroll back up and sits down to teach... He began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing" Luke 4:21. The people were stunned by His eloquence and learning. The content of His claims, however, were too much for the people who knew Him...He thinks He is the Messiah! Incredible claims require credible evidence. He is rejected in His own home town of Natzeret. Stoning was prohibited on a Sabbath, but Yeshua walks through their midst and slips from their grasp.
From Natzeret He travels to K'far-Nachum (Capernaum), a town in the Galilee...He officially begins His ministry with the formal call of His talmidim (disciples)...The P'rushim (Pharisees) clearly considered Yeshua to be a chaver, which means friend or fellow. If they did not, they would not have invited Him to eat with them, nor would they have held Him to the standards of the chaverim or fellow P'rushim. Yeshua explains He spends time with the sinners and tax collectors in the same way a doctor spends time with sick people...Yeshua was concerned with the irreligious. Later in His ministry the p'rushim became increasingly hostile toward Yeshua, but in the beginning they admired Him.
The Gospels of Mattityahu, Mark, Luke, and Yochanan, tell us of Yeshua's miracles, His teachings in the synagogues and throughout Israel, healing the sick and driving out unclean spirits and raising the dead. His fame spread throughout Israel and people came to Him from everywhere. In power, word, and deed He demonstrated the validity of His claim, "The Kingdom of heaven is here."

About the Book
Christianity has attempted to present Messiah in universal terms by stripping Him of His Jewish identity and presenting Him to the world as a universal, one-size-fits-all Savior. In doing so, they have removed Him from the inheritance of Abraham and robbed Him of His core identity. Jewish people have experienced thousands of years of persecution. They have been taught to believe that they are traitors to their people if they accept Yeshua as Messiah. They have looked for a King, a political leader who would free them from their oppressors and provide peace and prosperity. So they also have robbed Him of His core identity.
Bible critics and scholars are talking about the differences between the Messiah of Christianity and the historical person Yeshua, referred to as Jesus Christ. But who is Yeshua? Yeshua was a Torah-observant Jew who practiced the faith of Biblical Judaism throughout His lifetime. He looked like a Jew, acted like a Jew, and worshipped like a Jew. Failure to understand these facts has robbed Jew and Christians alike of spiritual understanding of who Yeshua really was. Dr. Esther Diane Boucher is the co-founder and president of New England Christian College and Seminary, and Gates of Praise Ministries,Inc. in Fall River, MA. She is a graduate of Christian College and Seminary in Independence, MO., and has a doctorate in Divinity. Esther is internationally recognized as a gifted teacher and public speaker. Dr. Boucher is the rabbi of Kehilat Yisrael in Newport, RI, and co-pastors Faith Fellowship Church, with her husand in Portsmouth, RI. She is "a woman with a mission" to emphasize divine truths of the Hebraic Scriptures and heritage, to remind people of their responsibility to worship and honor the Creator, and to challenge and call Jews and Christians back to their ancient roots of radical passion for the Messiah no matter the cost.
