Katarina couldn’t speak any English, so Sand and Tali tried teaching her. “Water.” Sand let the water splash through her hands. “Water.” “Voter,” Katarina said softly, looking at the ground. “No, ‘wah-ter.’” Sand opened her mouth wider. “Waaater.” “Vaaa, vaaater,” Katarina answered. Jennifer splashed water on Katarina. “She doesn’t understand. Don’t talk to her.” Tali whirled around to face Jennifer. “She does, too. And don’t splash her. That’s mean.” Jennifer’s face turned red. “I didn’t. My hand hit the water by accident.” “You’re lying,” Tali said. “You did splash her. I saw you.” Jennifer didn’t answer. She ducked underwater and tossed her soaking hair backward when she came up. “Let’s see who can stay under water the longest.”

About the Book
Dancing Fields is a special place to live, where doors are never locked, toys are left outside and cars are not allowed wherever children play. All the kids who live there know each other. We find out the reason for Jennifer’s meanness and watch as she changes for the better. About the Author
Growing up, Ronit Elk moved with her family to a new country every few years. Each time, she went to a new school where they spoke a different language and had their own way of doing things. So Ronit learned about various cultures and she made friends with many children in lots of countries. Today, she and her family live in a place similar to the one described in this book, in Atlanta, Georgia. They share their home with a super-friendly, giant, white dog and three very fluffy (and quite persnickety!) cats.
