A Second Later...

Blake came down the stairs, touching each step softly as if she was sneaking around in her own home.  She reached the bottom step and listened to see if she could hear where her husband might be.

Jimmy was mulling over what had been happening in his home lately.  He knew that the time was right for him to make his choice.  He could stay and endure the problems he was facing with his wife, or leave and be happy with his new found lady, Linda.

Blake watched as her husband turned the TV off and started rising from his chair.  Their eyes locked when they saw each other and both of them froze, scared to move.

Blake spoke first.  “I wanted to get a glass of water”, she said still keeping her eyes locked on his.  She moved her feet slowly and managed to make it to the nearby sink.  She reached for a glass and turned the cold water on.  As it poured from the tap, she saw Jimmy starting to walk towards her.

“I think we should talk”, he said, his voice rather low and quiet. 

Blake’s heart started pounding with fear.  She wasn’t sure that she wanted to hear what he had to say.

“Blake, honey”, he said, still moving closer to her side.  “I don’t think this is working out between us anymore.”

Blake’s throat was now closing up more and more with each word that left his full-lipped mouth.

“I think it might be best if I stayed at a hotel for a few days”, he said diverting his eyes so he was not looking directly into her face. 

They both knew he was lying. 

Blake turned the water off without adding any drops into the glass.  She rushed to his side and begged him to stay.  “Please!” she cried.  “Please don’t go!  I don’t want you to leave.  I love you.”  The tears were pouring from her eyes as she begged him to stay with her.
