“You’ll be okay little guy,” Colin soothed as he stroked the yearling’s head. On its little butt was painted a telephone number. Colin grabbed the rope lying in the stall and attached it to the tiny halter; he stood up and gently yanked the rope. The yearling clumsily stood up. “Thank God!” said a relieved Colin. “C’mon little guy, you come outside with me.” He slowly led the horse out of the barn. Yvonne was waiting. She squealed with delight and immediately took the horse from him.
“Thank you, thank you,” she gushed. “Let me take him . . . Oh, he’s been hurt. I’ll take care of him. Wait! Before you go back in, how . . . how, is the fireman that went in after the horses. Andrew, I think his name was?” she asked.
“Not good. He’s unconscious. We’re getting help,” Colin told her and quickly left.
Danny knew that there were six front-line fire engines out there with defibrillators fitted, he grabbed the radio and quickly called the radio dispatcher.
“Jimmy, find out where the closest engine is to the Z-Spear. The ranch is twenty kilometers north of
“Yes sir, hold on. Here it is. I will dispatch it immediately.” Jimmy was unusually nervous around Danny.
“Ask them how long before they get here,” Danny demanded.
Danny wiped the sweat from his eyes and waited. Jimmy’s hands were shaking as he plugged into the switchboard and signaled for help.
“Come in Med Engines. Med Engines, please come in,” Jimmy squeaked, cleared his throat and repeated, “Med Engines, please come in,” in a strong gruff voice.
Then he heard: “Roger, Med Engine Five here. Over.”
They exchanged communication and Jimmy immediately called Danny.
“Good news,” he began, “Med Engine Five, with a defibrillator, will be there in approximately seven minutes! The engine crew heard a cry for help from the air-tanker, they were already on their way. The air-tanker pilot had seen the ground crew entering the barn and quickly acted, precautionary,” Jimmy informed Danny in his most professional voice.
“Thanks Jimmy. Over and out.”
Danny went back to where Andrew was lying. He signaled for Ben to wait outside to show the guys where to come. He placed Andrew’s head on his strong thigh.
“Hold on man; they’re coming with a defibrillator,” Danny pleaded. “It is going to help you.”
Danny knew how to use the defibrillator; he had lots of medic training in
Andrew opened his eyes.
“Danny, I may . . . not . . . make it . . .”
He gestured for Danny to come closer, and asked if the young horse had made it.
“Andy, f--k the horse, worry about you. You shouldn’t have gone in there to save a horse . . .”
“I know -- I know -- but it . . . was stuck . . . its mouth . . . the smoke . . .”
“Okay, try not to talk.”
Oh my God, not like this, no Andy please! Danny thought, biting down hard on his lip to stop from screaming.
Andrew’s eyes closed, he was having difficulty breathing, his hand rested quietly on his chest, waiting. Danny heard the distinct sound of the fire engine; it was one of the front liners. He gently lifted Andrew’s head, placing his jacket underneath.

About the Author
UNtamed is Samantha Elphick’s first sequel to her breakout novel UNbridled, it has been three years in the making. Readers showed interest in her main characters Burton, Mike and Danny, as if they were real people—she decided to write two more sequels.
“A Trilogy of Youth” was created and Samantha got busy writing. She picked Danny in the starring role of UNtamed as protagonist and carried the story over from the tragic ending of her first novel. Keeping readers in suspense as to what happened to Burton, while focusing on a subject that is close to her heart—one she experienced years ago with her own daughter.
Today, like many of us, Samantha’s investments in South Carolina have suffered due to the state of the economy and was forced to reside permanently again in Florida. She is committed to writing novels as well as freelance writing short stories and magazine articles. To help support her passion and new career in writing, she reinvented herself by turning her horse property into a Bed and Breakfast for equestrian and polo vacations, there she will teach polo lessons and sell the occasional polo prospect when she’s not writing.
Samantha lives as a single person, with her 5-year old Jack Russell, Manchitas. Her three children reside in Boston Massachusetts. Her third novel, and final in this trilogy of youth will be set and written in its entirety in her native country Australia.
