The Confession Booth

It was like an outer body experience.
My mind refused to comprehend what was happening.
I was at war with my mother.
All the years of criticism had reached it’s boiling point.
Finally, I’d had enough!
Words slicing through her like a scalpel,
slowly bringing about her demise.
But she wasn’t making this easy.
Every time I thought I had her cornered,
she’d somehow finagle herself to live
a few moments longer.
My senses never felt more heightened
as each blow dealt more damage.
Pop watched helplessly from the side
as the onslaught continued.
My brothers pleaded that I show mercy.
But there would be none today.
I had to finish this once and for all.
With mom staring her demise in the face,
I went in for the kill.
“Excogitate, triple word score!” I yelled,
ready to celebrate sweet victory.
But before I could drop the final ‘e’,
the alarm clock screamed and
awoke me from the most wonderful dream.
And I just laid there,
staring at the ceiling...Foiled again.
I was so close this time, I thought.
Oh well....
I guess even in my dreams
I’ll never beat my mom in Scrabble.
