From Chapter 6: Trusting Allegiance “Look, the text faded away!” “Look farther,” Jordan suggested. Julien quickly turned pages. All were blank. Almost a quarter of the way through the diary, the text appeared once more. “Look at the date!” Jordan hissed. Ten Decembre, fifteen sixty. Etienne’s diary continued from that point without interruption. The text remained clear and dark to the last page. The final entry was dated Twenty-eight Decembre, fifteen sixty-one. “But what happened to the part we were reading?” Julien demanded. Jordan closed his eyes and held up a hand. Fierce concentration filled his face. Suddenly, his eyes opened wide. Julien’s stomach took a deep lurch. He gulped once. “Jordan, what—are you th—thinking?” “We’ve been wondering if we’d have another adventure with the twins’ swords. Maybe this is it.” “What do you mean?” “This,” He swept a dramatic hand toward the diary. “This is our next adventure!” “This?” Julien questioned. “This!” Jordan turned to the place where the writing disappeared. “There’s no reason why Etienne’s words should fade away; the book has been protected for centuries from all manner of harmful things. “Remember our dream? Our family is supposed to be influential for five hundred years! We’re reading about what happened back then, and the words fade out! “The only reason they might fade is that we haven’t done them yet!” “That doesn’t make sense, Jordan!” “Yes, it does!” An exasperated sigh escaped. “Well, in a crazy way it does,” he admitted. Julien stared at his cousin. “I must be going crazy, then, because I think I’m beginning to see. It’s like what the twins said when we saw them between the worlds, isn’t it?” Jordan nodded, suddenly knowing what Julien meant. “They told us their story up to their deaths, but couldn’t tell us any more because it hadn’t happened for them yet. We had to go into 1620 and make it happen before they could go to their final rest.” “Right.” “The diary’s words faded out for our eyes because we haven’t yet done what they say?” “That’s the way I see it.” “Can we—go back?” “The twins thought we’d be able to.” “But, they never experienced it!” “There’s only one way to find out.” “Shall we?” Jordan gestured to the field. “Let’s walk away from the house, u

About the Author
M. Bradley Davis’ sixth grade English teacher made a mistake. She introduced him to poetry. (Thank you, Mrs. Foster!) Since then, Mr. Davis has learned that while he isn’t a poet, he loves telling stories. Mr. Davis became a teacher in 1985. He taught fourth grade for thirteen years. He taught all the usual suspects—ah, subjects; he added courtesy, honesty, respect, and character to his students’ lessons. Mr. Davis was listed in Who’s Who Among His former students and the young people around him inspire Mr. Davis’ characters. Mr. Davis is active in his church. His hobbies include reading, writing, amateur astronomy, and photography. The Reluctant Prince is Mr. Davis’ eighth book. He has seven other novels published through AuthorHouse.
